Rebol est le "Relative Expression Based-Object = Language" de=20 Carl Sassenrath. Cet ancien membre de l'=E9quipe conceptrice de l' Amiga = n'a pas=20 uniquement d=E9velopp=E9 un nouveau langage mais =E9galement un ensemble = de solutions=20 destin=E9 =E0 r=E9volutionner la r=E9alisation de logiciels. L'ambition = de Rebol est de=20 former un tout coh=E9rent ! A l'instar de XML, Rebol est un format de = description=20 de l'information mais tout comme Java, il est =E9galement un langage de=20 d=E9veloppement multiplateformes permettant une ind=E9pendance totale = entre la=20 machine h=F4te et l'ex=E9cution du code. L'intelligence du concept Rebol = repose sur=20 la constatation simple que l'informatique est devenu communicante, que = les=20 programmeurs ont besoin d'une nouvelle g=E9n=E9ration de langages, plus = expressifs=20 gr=E2ce =E0 une syntaxe proche du langage humain et ayant la capacit=E9 = d'utiliser les=20 protocoles standards d'=E9change d'informations de TCP/IP. Un logiciel = moderne ne=20 doit plus =EAtre con=E7u =E0 l'=E9chelle d'un poste mais =E0 celle d'un = r=E9seau de syst=E8mes=20 interconnect=E9s devant partager donn=E9es et programmes.

Programmer, c'est construire des mots

Au sens classique du terme, Rebol est un langage non = compil=E9.=20 Le code n'est pas transform=E9 en un ex=E9cutable binaire ou dans un = quelconque=20 bytecode =E0 la mani=E8re de Java. En fait, tout comme Lisp ou Scheme, = Rebol est un=20 =E9valuateur. Celui ci construit un vocabulaire =E0 partir d'un script = et interpr=E8te=20 les mots que vous avez d=E9fini ainsi que ceux appartenant au = dictionnaire=20 standard du langage. Ce mode de fonctionnement fait de Rebol un = meta-langage:=20 c'est-=E0-dire un langage ayant la capacit=E9 de se d=E9crire, de se = red=E9finir et de=20 s'enrichir par ses propres m=E9canismes internes.

En Rebol, tout est mots: les instructions, les = variables, les=20 fonctions et les objets sont des mots. Certains ont simplement une=20 fonctionnalit=E9 particuli=E8re ! Tous ces mots appartiennent au = contexte g=E9n=E9ral ou=20 =E0 un contexte particulier. Tout comme dans une langue parl=E9e, un mot = peut avoir=20 une signification particuli=E8re selon le contexte d'=E9valuation.

Les mots peuvent =E9galement =EAtre d=E9finis dans un = dialecte qui=20 est une sorte de langage m=E9tier: un langage dans le langage, destin=E9 = =E0 accomplir=20 une t=E2che tr=E8s sp=E9cialis=E9e. Pour mieux comprendre les dialectes, = nous pouvons=20 prendre pour exemple l'informatique. Lorsque des informaticiens parlent = de leur=20 m=E9tier, une personne ext=E9rieure =E0 ce milieu professionnel a bien = souvent=20 beaucoup de difficult=E9s =E0 saisir le sens de la conversation. Certes, = ces=20 informaticiens parlent fran=E7ais mais enrichissent leurs propos de = diff=E9rents=20 termes techniques qui forment un dialecte connu d'eux seuls ! Une machine virtuelle

L'=E9valuateur est en fait une machine virtuelle = permettant de=20 simuler un environnement d'ex=E9cution identique quelque soit le = syst=E8me=20 d'exploitation et l'architecture mat=E9rielle utilis=E9e. Contrairement = =E0 Java,=20 celle ci est tr=E8s l=E9g=E8re puisqu'elle varie entre 250 et 400 Ko = selon les=20 versions. Elle est =E9galement et surtout tr=E8s simple =E0 installer = puisqu'elle ne=20 comporte qu'un seul et unique ex=E9cutable. Oui ! vous ne r=EAvez pas, = la machine=20 virtuelle Rebol tient enti=E8rement dans un seul fichier. Il n'y a = aucune DLL ou=20 librairie =E0 installer et ceci quelque soit le syst=E8me = d'exploitation. En=20 quelques secondes, il est possible de transformer n'importe quel = ordinateur en=20 une machine capable d'utiliser vos applications =E9crites en Rebol ! =

Cette machine virtuelle contient l'=E9valuateur = Rebol, le=20 dictionnaire standard, les protocoles TCP/IP support=E9s, le garbage = collector=20 charg=E9 de la gestion de la m=E9moire et le gestionnaire de = s=E9curit=E9.

Une famille de produits

Rebol se d=E9cline actuellement en trois versions. Le = Core est la=20 machine virtuelle de base. Ce composant, disponible pour une quarantaine = de=20 plate-formes, est l'=E9l=E9ment commun sur lequel reposent les autres = versions du=20 langage.
